Description

Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that aim to stimulate the discovery, design and early preclinical evaluation of highly innovative, risky but rational approaches that could provide long-term protection from acquiring HIV infection. Recent setbacks in the vaccine and other biomedical prevention fields have raised several questions leading to increased interest for additional alternative track and untested outside-the-box approaches, highlighting the need for new and innovative paradigms for discovering and developing fresh prevention strategies. The proposed work is expected to explore novel hypotheses or address difficult problems, the solutions to which could have a significant impact on finding methods to interrupt HIV transmission. The research proposed is expected to focus on verifying a hypothesis or solving a problem for the field. The program is open to established and new investigators and does not require research expertise in the area of HIV prevention as a prerequisite for submitting an application. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIAID intends to commit approximately $4M in total costs in FY 2010 to fund 5-10 applications submitted in response to this FOA. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
