Purpose. Under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development requests applications to implement developmental community based participatory research (CBPR) projects planned and developed by recipients of the Phase I Academic-Community Partnerships Conference Series awards under PAR-08-106 and RFA-HD-06-019 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-08-106.html). This initiative will encompass capacity building (i.e., data collection and management, recruitment and outreach, etc) as well as implementation of the developmental translational research projects within specified areas of emphasis (infant mortality; sudden infant death syndrome; fibroid tumors; childhood, adolescent, and/or adult obesity; literacy; techniques for outreach and information dissemination; pediatric and maternal HIV/AIDS prevention; and violence prevention) which were planned and designed in Phase I. Through the Phase I and II community-academic partnerships awards, it is intended that key stakeholders including persons affected by disparities in health outcomes will become full participants in translational research from conception to the design; implementation, analysis, and interpretation; and communication of research results. The development of innovative interventions or the adaptation and implementation of existing advances within the community setting is the expected outcome. Culture and health literacy must be key considerations in the development or adaptation of evidence based interventions for implementation in racial/ethnic minority communities.
