Description

The objective of the project has two parts the first is to implement conservation actions outlined in threatened and endangered species recovery plans as well as in the conservation agreement and strategies for these special status species. The overall goal of the recovery plans is to complete recovery actions that will eventually lead to de-listing of the species. The overall goal of the conservation agreement and strategies is to ensure the long-term persistence of the species by eliminating or significantly reducing threats and restoring populations throughout the historic range. If the efforts of this program are successful the public will benefit in that the listed species may eventually become de-listed and the conservation agreement species would not be listed as an Endangered Species Act threatened or endangered species. Once aquatic habitat, species distribution and potential fisheries habitat is determined, land use decisions and actions such as energy development, recreational activities, grazing management, and reality actions can be completed in compliance with the BLM policy 6840. Mitigation plans can then be developed and implemented, allowing for the protection and improvement of this habitat while proposed actions move forward. The second objective is for the BLM to work cooperatively and partner for AIS work associated with BLM lands. This is public benefit in that AIS are simply bad for Utah?s environment and economy for a multitude of reasons. AIS challenge our native species, out-competing them for food, displacing them from natural habitats or infecting them with disease. AIS obstruct flow in waterways, impacting municipal, industrial, and irrigation water supply delivery. AIS degrade ecosystems, reducing or threatening recreational or commercial fishing opportunities. And, AIS can cause wildlife and public health problems. These reasons are not all-inclusive, but alone they give cause for serious concern and the need for aggressive management through the proposed program and agreement.
