Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits applications for the Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) in Cancer Nanotechnology Research. This initiative is an integral component of a broader program to continue the interactive NCI Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer (the Alliance) (http://nano.cancer.gov). In addition to this initiative, the Alliance will consist of the Center for Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNEs, as a core of the program infrastructure), platform projects (CNPPs), and Cancer Nanotechnology Training Centers (CNTCs). The primary purpose of this Pathway to Independence Award Program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new talented investigators focused on research in cancer nanotechnology. The program is designed to facilitate a timely transition from a mentored postdoctoral research position to a stable independent research position with independent research support at an earlier stage than is currently the norm. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) mechanism. This FOA complements other Alliance FOAs that will support the Centers for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence awards (U54 funding mechanism, RFA-CA-09-012), the Cancer Nanotechnology Platform Partnerships (U01 mechanism, RFA-CA-09-013), and Cancer Nanotechnology Training Centers (R25 mechanism, RFA-CA-09-014). Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. For this K99/R00 FOA, the NCI has committed approximately $2 million in total costs for FY 2010 and $10 million over a 5-year period. Approximately 8-10 awards are expected to be made in connection with this FOA.
