Description

Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) solicits cooperative agreement grant applications from institutions to conduct basic laboratory or ancillary research projects involving existing populations or clinical studies focused on gene-environment interactions, as well as the molecular mechanisms engaged, during specific windows of susceptibility that have the potential of modifying a womans lifetime risk for developing breast cancer. These activities run in parallel with a limited competition FOA to support ongoing epidemiological investigations as well as a FOA to assume Coordinating Functions for the Breast Cancer and Environment Research Program (BCERP; see RFA-ES-09-008 and RFA-ES-09-010, respectively). The BCERP supports transdisciplinary research on the interactions of environmental factors (including chemical, physical, and social environmental) with genetic factors during windows of susceptibility throughout a womans lifespan that potentially influence breast cancer risk. Each research project is required to partner with a local community-based or advocate organization focused on breast cancer as a concern. Community partners will assist with outreach activities to include, but not limited to, translating and communicating research finding to the public and policy makers as well as building and promoting partnerships among researchers, community members, and other engaged stakeholders. The community partners are expected to participate collaboratively with all the members of the BCERP Network, but especially with existing Community Outreach and Translation Cores associated with the ongoing epidemiologic investigations in supporting communication, outreach, and translation of research findings from the BCERP.
