Description

Purpose. This FOA, issued by National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health, solicits Cooperative Agreement (U01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to study the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions for hospitalized patients. Hospitalization provides a unique opportunity for smoking cessation, and although the nature of cessation interventions during hospitalization varies widely, these interventions appear efficacious when continued cessation support is provided for at least one month post-discharge. Therefore, the purpose of this FOA is to encourage research to evaluate the translation of efficacious smoking cessation strategies initiated during hospitalization and continued post-discharge into effective programs that can be widely implemented in routine clinical practice and assess the cost-effectiveness of these interventions. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Cooperative Agreement (U01) grant mechanism. A companion FOA (RFA HL-10-025) solicits U01 applications for a Research Coordinating Unit to coordinate the activities of the awardees of this U01. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI expects to award $13.5 million in total costs over four years to fund approximately three to four awards through this announcement. NIDA and NCI each expect to award $3.8 million in total costs over four years to fund approximately one award each. Together, NHLBI, NIDA, and NCI expect to award $21.1 million over four years to fund five to six awards through this announcement. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
