Obesity Policy Research: Evaluation and Measures (R21)

Description
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD),Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), NIH, and the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, CDC, encourages Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) applications that propose to: (1) conduct evaluation research on obesity-related natural experiments (defined here as community and other population-level public policy interventions that may affect diet and physical activity behavior), and/or (2) develop and/or validate relevant community-level measures (instruments and methodologies to assess the food and physical activity environments at the community level). The overarching goal of this FOA is to inform public policy and research relevant to (1) diet and physical activity behavior, and (2) weight and health outcomes of Americans. The R21 grant mechanism is intended to encourage exploratory/developmental research by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of project development. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the exploratory/developmental (R21) grant mechanism, and runs in parallel with two other FOAs of identical scientific scope, PA-10-027 and PA-10-029 that encourage applications under the NIH research project (R01) and NIH Small Grant (R03) grant mechanisms. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
