Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), encourages research grant applications from investigators who propose to study topics that will determine blood banking and transfusion practice. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is responsible for supporting research in blood banking and transfusion medicine. This research aimed at improving the safety and availability of the blood supply and the practice of transfusion medicine is critical to public health since about five million patients receive blood transfusions every year in the U.S. Since blood transfusions pose infectious and non-infectious risks to recipients, it is important to understand the determinants of transfusion-associated adverse events and how best to minimize transfusion risks. It is also crucial to maintain an adequate blood supply by minimizing the risks associated with the donation process and developing enhanced recruitment and retention programs. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-10-034 which encourages applications under the R01 mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
