Description

Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Education (R25) grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to conduct Summer Institute programs to enable faculty and scientists from diverse backgrounds to further develop their research skills and knowledge, enhancing their career development as faculty members or scientists. This FOA runs in parallel with a separate FOA that solicits the applications for a Coordination Core (See RFA-HL-10-028). The primary goal of the Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) is to encourage scientists and research-oriented faculty from diverse backgrounds to further develop their research skills and gain experience in advanced methods and experimental approaches in basic and applied sciences relevant to heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. Ultimately, these enhanced skills will allow them to compete for external funding for scientific research in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Specifically, this FOA invites applications from senior faculty, established researchers, and experienced mentors to direct the Summer Institutes of the PRIDE programs in order to mentor promising candidates. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism. Research education programs may not be transferred from one institution to another, unless strongly justified (see Section VI.2). Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit up to $1.5 million in total costs in FY2010 to fund up to five Summer Institute programs. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications
