Description

The purpose of the agreement is to provide financial assistance to complete habitat restoration and implement long-term administration, operation and maintenance on 118 acres of habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife on the floodplain of the Jordan River in Salt Lake County, Utah. The objective of this activity is to restore natural resources held in trust by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of Interior (migratory birds and their habitats) that were injured by the release of hazardous substances caused by the operations of the Sharon Steel Mill, which was located on the Jordan River downstream from the project site, and for which the Service received a Natural Resource Damage Settlement (the Settlement) in 1995. The activities proposed in the agreement are consistent with the goals and objectives of the Sharon Steel Natural Resource Restoration Plan (USFWS, 1997), which directs how the Settlement funds should be spent. Matching funds or in-kind donations, or funding from other sources will be required to complete this activity. Additional funding based on availability of funds.
