OVERVIEW The National Parks located within the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho) have many natural, cultural areas and complex trail systems within their own parks which require continuous maintenance. Providing young adults with the opportunity to work inside the National Park Service areas is a great way to expose intercity youth to the nation’s natural and cultural resources and to the outdoor wilderness experience. This exposure will also introduce the youths to public service while furthering their understanding and appreciation of the Nations natural and cultural resources. STATEMENT OF JOINT OBJECTIVES/PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN The Northwest Youth Corps will assist the national parks in the Pacific Northwest with natural and cultural resource maintenance. Youth will gain skills in trail maintenance and resource management while learning and experiencing the wilderness. RECIPIENT INVOLVEMENT Northwest Youth Corps will recruit and hire young adults ages 16 to 20 to accomplish environmental restoration/conservation services. These young adults will be employees of the Northwest Youth Corps. Northwest Youth Corps will provide all transportation, tools and oversight of the crews. Crews may be required to camp in the wilderness if so stated in the Task Agreement. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE INVOLVEMENT NPS will provide instructors and training materials for environmental awareness, conservation, and NPS policy. NPS will evaluate the Northwest Youth Corps safety plan, and monitor the program. The Northwest Youth Corps has provided young adults to assist NPS with projects at 8 different parks within the Pacific Northwest over the past 7 years. Average total annual amount $125,000.00.
