Purpose. This FOA, the Microbicide Innovation Program (MIP VI), issued by NIAID, encourages Research Project Grant (R21/R33) applications in the field of topical microbicides to advance: Development of new microbicide approaches and additional rational targets through preclinical and basic research Discovery and characterization of microbicides (singly or in combinations) directed against HIV or STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) that are linked to HIV acquisition The identification and promotion of emerging technologies or models that contribute to the development of new and/or more efficient ways of assessing microbicide safety, efficacy and acceptability Design of complex prevention strategies that incorporate vaginal, rectal, and/or penile applied microbicides. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH R21/R33 Phased Innovation Award to support innovative exploratory and developmental research. Under the R21 phase research is initiated and carried out through a milestone-driven process to establish the feasibility of new microbicides, microbicide strategies and research that supports microbicide discovery and development. The R33 phase subsequently provides additional support required to further develop the R21 outcomes and, if applicable, translate the innovative discoveries into the preclinical/clinical development pipeline. It is expected that approximately 50% of the R21 awards will transition to the R33 phase. Applications for R21 support alone, or for R33 support alone, are not accepted under this FOA.
