Description

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) New Mexico Invasive Species Strike Team (NMISST) implements invasive species management at six National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) in the state. This Task Agreement will provide interns from diverse backgrounds with hands-on training, skill development and career exploration in the preservation, conservation and restoration of natural resources. In addition to the conservation training activities, professional development will also be provided in life skills, job readiness skills, leadership, and stewardship of their national wildlife refuges. General oversight is provided by the New Mexico National Wildlife Refuge staff and the NMISST program Coordinator. The scope of this project includes mapping, control and monitoring of invasive plant species at four refuges. Government will not supply vehicles or equipment and app licant must have liscense to apply herbicide in the state of New Mexico. Plant species addressed in this task include but are not limited to invasive thistles, perennial pepperweed, and Russian knapweed. Due to time-sensitive chemical application requirements, schedules are firm once agreed upon by applicant and FWS NMISST. FWS NMISST will provide all herbicides and surfactants as needed and determine the standards for application rates of chemicals. The FWS NMISST will award one applicant. Work will need to begin as early as May 15, 2010 and be completed by July 15, 2010.
