This Funding Announcement is not a request for applications. This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service (NPS), intention to fund the following project activities without competition.OVERVIEWPartners of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail are working with the partners of the Iditarod National Historic Trail to replicate the successful National Park Service Trail to Every Classroom (TTEC) program for the Iditarod National Historic Trail. TTEC is a successful professional development program for teachers from Georgia to Maine to engage youth through formal service-learning, curriculum based activities. National Park Service staff has been working with Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance and other partners of the Iditarod to plan and implement the Iditarod Trail to Every Classroom (iTREC!) program in 2010. iTREC! will consist of a cumulative series of workshops throughout the 2010/2011 school year. Approximately 15 teachers from communities along the Trail will participate in iTREC! and develop place-based, service-learning curriculum to actively engage youth in trail activities.STATEMENT OF JOINT OBJECTIVES/PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLANThrough the iTREC! program, the Iditarod National Historic Trail (INHT) spanning from Seward to Nome will be highlighted to:• Foster community awareness of and personal connection to the INHT.• Connect rural and urban communities along the INHT.• Engage youth and communities in active outdoor experiences.• Build lifelong stewards of Alaska's public lands, natural resources and cultural heritage.• Expose community youth to career and employment opportunities.RECIPIENT INVOLVEMENTThe recipient will be responsible for participant recruitment, travel arrangements for participants and workshop logistics including developing session agendas, securing workshop facilities, confirming presenters, purchasing of supplies and materials. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE INVOLVEMENTThe National Park Service Appalachian Trail (APPA) staff will work with the recipient to plan and implement the iTREC! program. This includes travel to Alaska, facilitating planning sessions, sharing TTEC program materials, and present at one or more sessions of iTREC!. APPA staff will also work with the recipient to develop an evaluation plan to document program outcomes.
