This project seeks research into modification of printed map scans leading to delivery of historic geographic data by georeferencing images of lithographically printed topographic maps. These georeferenced images will supplement and enhance the generation map graphics products by: • optimize the process of determining map layout and location on a published sheet, especially when the map is part of an atlas product where each sheet contains other text, graphics, geologic sections or other reference maps • permit straightforward manipulation and mathematical transformation of map images, including cases where geographic reference points are not consistent or uniformly located. • create georeferenced electronic files of maps suitable for access through the Web. • present historic cartographic information in a format suitable for viewing and inclusion in a greater body of scientific literature • document and publish of developed process to support other map collections using this process to convert locally held lithographic maps • identify map characteristics, including datum and projection, when not specified as most of these maps were not documented or published using national standards. The award recipient will research the scientific process and methods for image transformations of scans of lithographically printed maps to georeferenced digital files. This includes requirements to retain scientific cartographic integrity of the original maps, transformation steps, and automated recognition of the shape and x-y location of the irregular graticule intersection control points for image transformation. The research will extend, improve, and document the existing georeference processes. Recipient must have expertise in geospatial manipulation of data, especially as applied to map projections and transformation. Expertise is required for applying the above-stated developed to small scale and historical maps. This agreement will provide the opportunity to research, evaluate and document the cartographic and geographic information science needed to partially- or fully-automate conversion of X-Y images of scanned maps to georeferenced image files. Accuracy is critical and must match original maps. Pattern recognition of the shape and x-y location of the gratitude intersection marks as transformation control points is expected to greatly facilitate image transformation and will also be part of this research. At end of the study, a presentation to USGS/NGP staff will be made and an article to be submitted to a recognized scientific journal will be encouraged.
