Description

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Arizona Invasive Species Strike Team (AZISST) implements invasive species management at nine National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs) in the state. This Task Agreement will provide interns from diverse backgrounds with hands-on training, skill development and career exploration in the preservation, conservation and restoration of natural resources. In addition to the conservation training activities, professional development will also be provided in life skills, job readiness skills, leadership, and stewardship of their National Wildlife Refuges. General oversight is provided by the AZISST Coordinator and refuge staff. The scope of this project includes mapping, control and monitoring of invasive plant species, and early detection/rapid response of invasive plants at potentially nine refuges, however, primary work will be at four refuges. The ISST program will provide the necessary PPE and herbicides during the length of this agreement and additionally, one vehicle during the October through January full-time work period. Applicant must have license to apply herbicide in the state of Arizona. Plant species addressed in this task include but are not limited to salt cedar, buffle grass, African (Sahara) mustard, Salvinia, and tumbleweed. Due to time-sensitive chemical application requirements, schedules are firm once agreed upon by applicant and FWS AZISST. FWS AZISST will provide all herbicides and surfactants as needed and determine the standards for application rates of chemicals. The FWS AZISST will award one applicant. Work will need to begin as early as October 4, 2010 and be completed by September 30, 2011.
