Description

Implementation of this project will result in the collection of rare and other native plant seed located on BLM managed public lands in southwestern and other areas of Utah. The objective is to collect sufficient seed to conserve and maintain wild populations of rare plant species through the exsitu method of long term seed storage or as a part of the Seeds of Success program. Listed threatened, endangered, candidate, and BLM sensitive species would be targeted for collection. Other native plant species would also be collected. Center for Plant Conservation guidelines and protocols for rare plant species seed collection would be carefully followed. The seeds would be dried, packaged, and stored cryogenically at either Red Butte Garden or at the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation. Some seed would remain in log term freezer storage. Other seed would be collected and stored according to Seeds of Success protocol. The successful applicant must be a member of the Center for Plant Conservation in order to have access to the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation. The successful applicant also must have access to the long term freezer storage facilities at Red Butte Garden, University of Utah.
