Description

The USGS is offering a funding opportunity for research to advance understanding to establish greenhouse gas offset protocols for wetland restoration projects. These managed restored wetlands - carbon capture wetland farms – may be a viable land use option in the Delta, as they will increase habitat, reduce catastrophic flood risk, and generate carbon offset credits for land owners. If wetland carbon farming expands regionally, there will be a need to quantify large-scale below ground net primary productivity (BNPP) and carbon storage rates in order to establish carbon offset credits. This cutting edge research will help to determine how to regionally monitor below-ground biomass and productivity may identify methods that can be applied in the national resource assessment of sequestration of CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions from ecosystems.
