Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM) and the Grand Staircase Escalante Partners (GSEP) through the Escalante River Watershed Partnership have funding available to work with youth conservation corps for the purposes of preserving and creating jobs and promoting economic recovery. GSENM and GSEP are interested in working with a conservation corps to complete a woody invasive control project within the Deer Creek and Boulder Creek tributary of the Escalante River. This crew will move through everything from single isolated trees to thick patches. Sections of this area may best be covered if crew can divide for day hikes to cover more ground. Work campsites will vary from front country to back country. A total of 649 acres will be covered. Crews will be cutting and applying herbicide to Russian olive and tamarisk trees. Cutting procedures are very exact in that trees must be cut as close to and horizontal with the ground. Herbicide must be applied to the outer perimeter of the tree, the cambium layer, within ten minutes of cutting the tree. In some cases, trees will be girdled and herbicide applied. Based on the location and amount of debris, various removal methods will be employed including bucking up trees and creating slash piles, putting in the river, etc.
