The Water Science and Technology Board is currently undertaking a comprehensive study of the role of water reclamation and reuse in meeting future U.S. water supply needs. This broad study will consider a wide range of uses, including drinking water, non-potable urban uses, irrigation, industrial process water, groundwater recharge, and water for environmental purposes. The study is being carried out by a committee of experts and will produce a consensus report after two years. The Water Science and Technology Board has proposed conducting outreach to sponsoring organizations and interested parties by producing materials to accompany the final report. The proposed NRC study will be carried out by a committee of approximately 14 volunteer experts, with support from NRC staff. The committee will hold approximately five meetings to receive briefings, gather information, deliberate critical issues, and write its report. The results of the committee's work will be a published report that will consider technical, economic, institutional, and social challenges to increased adoption of water reuse and will provide practical guidance to decision makers evaluating their water supply alternatives. The report will be subject to standard NRC procedures for peer review before release. The report is expected to be available in pre-publication form approximately 21 months after commencement of the study. Following provision of the "pre-pub" version of the report, a three month period is allowed for editing and publication of the report by the National Academies Press and for briefings and other appropriate dissemination activities. A short (~8 page) color brochure will also be produced based on the final report for broad dissemination of the report's findings.
